Four kinds of refrigerator, four different repairs
| Type | How it is built | What that means for a repair |
|---|---|---|
| Column | Single-purpose full-height units — all refrigerator, all freezer, wine — set side by side | Each column has its own system; on Designer models the condenser breathes through the kickplate |
| Built-in (Classic) | Refrigerator and freezer in one cabinet with Dual Refrigeration: separate systems | One side can fail alone; the condenser is behind the top grille |
| French door | Two fresh-food doors over a freezer drawer | More gasket and more alignment to check; serial tag inside the left door |
| Undercounter (DEU) | Drawers or a door under the counter; refrigerator, freezer, beverage or wine versions | Serial tag on the cabinet ceiling; no internal water filter |
Not every built-in is laid out like a Sub-Zero
Monogram's built-in side-by-sides, for example, put the compressor and evaporator in the overhead compartment and blow air directly into each section, while its built-in bottom-freezers use one compressor with the evaporator on the freezer's rear wall. On a single-compressor design, a warm refrigerator and a warm freezer often share one cause; on a Sub-Zero Classic they usually do not.
Designer undercounter refrigeration (DEU) sets from 34°F to 42°F as a refrigerator, -5°F to 5°F as a freezer, 34°F to 55°F as a beverage center and 40°F to 65°F for wine — check which version you have before deciding it is running warm.
When the complaint is noise rather than temperature
A new rattle or buzz is usually a fan blade, a fan motor or a defrost drain, and those sit at the lower end of the price table ($300–$550). Our guide fridge making a loud noise walks through the sounds and what each means. Max Ice on Classic (CL), Designer (DET, DEC) and PRO units also makes some parts run faster with a distinct sound for 24 hours — normal.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Sub-Zero refrigerator repair cost in Rye?
Common faults run $300–$750; a fan motor $300–$550; a defrost heater or thermostat $320–$550; sealed-system work $800–$2,200. The $95 diagnostic is credited.
Is a column refrigerator more expensive to repair?
Not by type alone. The part decides the price; the type decides access and time. A column's condenser and fan are reached differently from a Classic built-in's, which can move a job within its range.
Why is only my refrigerator side warm?
On a Sub-Zero Classic the refrigerator and freezer have separate systems, so the refrigerator's own fan ($300–$550), defrost parts ($320–$550) or sensor ($280–$450) are the usual causes.

“Our Viking refrigerator had turned loud enough to hear from the hall and was drifting up toward 45. The condenser coils were caked with grey salt dust off the Sound, and behind them the fan motor had seized. Coils cleaned, motor changed, and he showed me how often to vacuum them at this end of town.”
“The fridge side of our Sub-Zero crept up to 52 while the freezer stayed rock solid. The defrost heater had quit and ice had sealed off the evaporator. Thawed, heater swapped, temperatures logged before he packed up.”
“Lettuce and berries kept freezing in our Thermador column even on the mildest setting. The air damper was stuck wide open. A new damper motor went in and he watched two cycles to be sure the section settled at 38.”
“Two burners on the Viking range lit only after a lot of clicking. The spark module was weak. He was straight with me that it had to be ordered, and the wait felt long, but the return visit was quick and all six light on the first turn.”
